Furman v. Georgia
In 1972, William Henry Furman was in the act of committing burglary in somebody's home. In the act, he was discovered and in the act of fleeing he was said to have tripped, which caused the firearm he had to go off, murdering a resident of the home. He was then convicted of the death penalty by the Georgia courts. The case was sent off to the supreme courts and was in a 5-4 decision for Furman, overturning his execution
Coker v. Georgia
In 1976, Elrich Anthony Coker was serving murder, rape, kidnapping, and assault charges and had escaped from prison. He then broke into a couples home and raped the woman of the home and stole the family's car. Coker was then sentenced to the death penalty by the Georgia courts. The case was sent to the supreme courts and in a 7-2 decision for Coker, it was decided that the death penalty was "grossly disproportionate" to rape.
I believe that the death penalty should be abolished. Murder is never morally acceptable and nobody deserves to live. I'm not condoning the actions of criminals sentenced to the death penalty, but i still believe the taking of another life is not justifiable.
